Webinar on 10 May 2022: Hate crimes and restorative justice
In May, the Ministry of Justice will organise an international webinar to share information on the practices of restorative justice in addressing hate crimes and hate speech.
Hate speech and hate crimes are a societal problem despite the fact that a number of measures have been taken to identify and prevent them. Restorative justice refers to an approach that seeks to deal with a damage or its risk by providing an opportunity for the parties, for example the victim and the perpetrator, to reach an agreement.
At the webinar, which is organised by the Ministry of Justice as part of the Capable (Osaavat) project, international experts will open up perspectives on restorative justice in the context of hate crimes and hate speech. The event will also discuss ways to address hate crimes.
The Capable (Osaavat) project aims to improve the effectiveness of work against hate crimes and harassment. The project receives funding from the European Commission's Rights, Equality and Citizenship (REC) programme.
The webinar will be held in Microsoft Teams on Tuesday 10 May 2022 at 10.00–15.30 (Helsinki). The event is open for all and it will be held in English. Registration is open until 8 May 2022. Instructions for participation will be sent to the registered participants before the event.
