The Unit for International Judicial Assistance functions as the designated Central Authority for the purposes of numerous EU regulations and international treaties concerning international cooperation in civil or criminal matters.

The key duties of the Central Authority are:

  • to transmit and receive requests by courts and other judicial authorities
  • to represent the applicant in certain cross-border family law matters and to initiate proceedings
  • to coordinate the activities of Finnish authorities, where needed
  • to provide guidance, advice and training in the application of international conventions
  • to actively participate in the follow-up meetings concerning international conventions
  • to keep in touch with foreign Central Authorities and networks in the field
