Euroopan neuvostossa tehtiin 25.1.1996 yleissopimus lasten oikeuksien käyttämisestä. Sopimus koskee lapsen kuulemista ja lapsen oikeutta saada edustaja lasta koskeviin oikeudenkäynteihin sekä tuomioistuimen ja lapsen edustajan tehtäviä näissä oikeudenkäynneissä.
