Press release

The Digital and Population Data Services Agency has started sending out polling cards (notices of right to vote) for the 2024 elections to the European Parliament, or European elections. A polling card will be sent to each eligible voter either by letter or via Suomi.fi Web Service in April or May. All polling cards will be sent out by 16 May 2024.

All Finnish citizens who have reached the age of 18 by 9 June 2024 and those EU citizens residing in Finland who have reached the age of 18 by 9 June 2024 and have registered to vote in Finland have the right to vote in the 2024 European elections. A person eligible to vote may only do so in one EU Member State: either in their home country or in their country of residence. The number of eligible voters in the upcoming elections is around 4.5 million.

More than one million voters will receive their polling card via Suomi.fi

Polling cards will be sent either by post or electronically according to the voter’s choice. One in four eligible voters have given their consent for all official messages to be sent to them electronically and will thus receive their polling card via Suomi.fi Messages. Voters may read notices sent to Suomi.fi Messages at Suomi.fi Web Service after identification or using the Suomi.fi mobile application on their device.

Election day polling station is determined based on voters’ place of residence on 19 April 2024

The election day polling station for the European elections is determined based on the voter's permanent place of residence that was recorded in the Population Information System on 19 April 2024.

The Digital and Population Data Services Agency has compiled the voting register for the 2024 European elections based on the information contained in the Population Information System on 19 April 2024. If an eligible voter wants to request an administrative review of information contained in the voting register from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency, they must do so by 24 May 2024.

If an eligible voter moves after 19 April, their election day polling station is determined in accordance with their previous place of residence.

Voters can find information about their election day polling station in their polling card.

Young voters are encouraged to vote

During April and May, a letter will be sent to young people who are entitled to vote in European elections for the first time. The letter provides information on the upcoming elections and encourages young people to exercise their right to vote.
