Election day for the European elections is Sunday 9 June 2024

Sunday 9 June is the election day for the elections to the European Parliament, or the European elections. On Sunday, polling stations will be open from 9.00 to 20.00. Preliminary results of the election conducted in Finland will be published on the evening of the election day starting at 20.00.

The candidates and their candidate numbers can be found in the Result Service of the Ministry of Justice. The list of candidates will also be displayed in the voting booths. The candidates stand for election in the entire country. In the elections, 15 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will be elected in Finland for a term of five years.

Right to vote in the European elections

All Finnish citizens who have reached the age of 18 by 9 June 2024 and those EU citizens residing in Finland who have reached the age of 18 by 9 June 2024 and have registered to vote in Finland have the right to vote in the 2024 European elections. A person eligible to vote may only do so in one EU Member State: either in their home country or in their country of residence. The total number of eligible voters in Finland is approximately 4.5 million.

On election day, 9 June, voting is only possible at the polling station specified in polling card

On election day, eligible voters may only vote at the polling station mentioned in their polling card. Polling stations will be open from 9.00 to 20.00. If there is a queue at the polling station, all voters who have arrived before 20.00 to wait for their turn will be allowed to vote.

The polling card specifies the voter’s election day polling station. Voters can also find their election day polling station using the Polling Station Service run by the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.

A polling card has been sent to each eligible voter by post or via Suomi.fi service. A polling card has been sent via Suomi.fi Messages to those voters who have given their consent for official messages to be sent electronically. Proving identity at polling station

Voters must present proof of their identity at the polling station. Official photo IDs, such as passports, driving licences and identity cards issued by the police are accepted as proof of identity. It is essential that an election official can reliably verify the voter's identity based on the document. Voters who do not have a valid proof of identity can obtain a temporary identity card free of charge from the police for voting purposes. A passport photo is required for a temporary identity card. The photo may not be older than six months.

First preliminary results will be available through the Ministry of Justice's Result Service on 9 June from 20.00 onwards

The vote count of the European elections in Finland can be followed in the Ministry of Justice's Result Service and in the media. During the evening of election day, the results will be updated as the vote count progresses. The data to be published in the Result Service includes the number and percentage of votes received by each political party, the number of seats won by each political party, and the number of votes received by each candidate in the entire country and in each electoral district, municipality and voting district. 

The results that will be published during the evening of election day are preliminary. 

A recount of votes will be conducted by the constituency electoral committees on Monday 10 June. The constituency electoral committee of Helsinki will confirm the election results for the entire country and issue credentials to the elected MEPs on Wednesday 12 June. The term of office of the new European Parliament will officially begin on Tuesday 16 July 2024.

Once the vote count has been completed, the results will also be made available as downloadable CSV files.
