Expert seminar focuses on anonymisation of court documents

Electronic processing, anonymisation and pseudonymisation of personal data contained in court judgements is the theme of a seminar to be organised by the Ministry of Justice in Helsinki on 5 September.

Around 70 experts from EU countries will attend the seminar ‘Anonymisation of Court Judgements – Challenges and Solutions’, which is part of Finland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The aim of the expert seminar is to increase knowledge and share experiences of different online applications and programmes available for anonymising personal data contained in court documents. The goal is to be able to publish and use these documents for a variety of purposes. Different ways of using artificial intelligence to anonymise personal data will also be discussed in the seminar.

The theme of the event is closely connected to the Anoppi project led by the Ministry of Justice. The project seeks to create electronic tools for processing and hiding personal data contained in court judgements. In the seminar, Finland will present the applications created within the project so far. Finnish courts will start testing these applications in spring 2020.

In the event, France and Austria will also present their national anonymization and pseudonymisation projects. As for EU institutions, the seminar will look at the anonymization and pseudonymisation of personal data included in the Official Journal of the European Union, judgements of the Court of Justice of the European Union, and other official publications. 

Furthermore, possibilities for closer cooperation and joint projects between EU member states in this field will be explored in the seminar.
