Seminar on the future of the EU Area of Justice and the Rule of Law 28 April

A high level discussion seminar regarding the future of the European Area of Justice, fundamental rights and the rule of law is held on Monday 28 April at 14.15 - 16.15 at the Great Hall, University of Helsinki. Seminar speakers include Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström, and Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson, as well as a number of Ministers of Justice from other EU member states. The seminar is open for the public.

The EU is built on respect for human rights and the rule of law. These values will take centre stage when preparing for the June European Council which will discuss new strategic guidelines for the development of the European Area of Justice. The building of an EU justice policy began at the Tampere European Council in 1999.

The program includes a presentation on the Rule of Law in the European Union by Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen. Ms Cecilia Malmström, Commissioner for Home Affairs will present the recently published EU Anti-Corruption Report. We will also hear a comment from Mr Morten Kjaerum, Director of the Fundamental Rights Agency of the EU. The views on the future of the European Area of Justice will be presented by Minister of Justice Anna-Maja Henriksson as well as by other Ministers of Justice from EU member states. The moderator of the seminar is Mr Thomas Wilhelmsson, Chancellor of the University of Helsinki.

The seminar is arranged by the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Justice and the University of Helsinki.
